Wakes Up The Hills and

Red Shield, the Scalped Man

I am going to tell about it there where we used to roam around long ago
AhnuuxunuuwaaWIhú – wenehkuraawiinátA –
when they used to go all around, – when they went hunting –
nuuNAhunaanawaáhAt niiNAhunuuwaáWI tanáhaʾ
there where the land spreads out where they used to roam buffalos,
NAhnunáhtš AxkaáʾA niinuuNAhkuraáʾU nuxtšičiinaaNIhuuníčI.
deer, antelopes different kinds wildlife that was plentiful.

na – noowitiraáNAt – wiiteešútš wewitinehkuRAhčituunáʾU.
And – then they went – young men after they banded together.
nootiraáNAt nuu hunaanoókAt.
Then they went there way off.
nootiraaníNAt.
Then they stopped to camp.
noowitinakánoʾ wenehkuraaNAhuuWIsátA na weneh-
Then they built a lodge when they prepared things, and when
kuraaWIhwaawanú wenehkuranuuwaáhu.
they went about hunting, when they were bringing (game) back.
witištiiwáʾux nehkutaakAxkawaakaroóku weNAhkuraanoótA.
They knew how to do things, their making dried meat when they were camped.

aniwehnaraanoótA wiiteešútš noowitiraáNAt.
After they had rested, the young men then they went on.
niikohniíhiʾ kanatuhneesiíšuʾ.
Wherever it was I do not know.
niikohniíhiʾ Ahnuuxunuu- waáWI nuuwenaRAhwaʾá – wah
Wherever it was their going about when they came there – now
áxkUx– wiiteešútš noowitii- hUhtaawátAt hináxtIt – wenaraawiinátA.
one– young man then he separated from them in the morning – when he went hunting.
číkuʾ kanawitiihunuuwaawikáʾIt NAhnunáhtš.
Any they were not roaming deer.
nuu noowitíʾAt na witiwaákUx nawaaNIhuunúku.
There then he went and there was a hill its being a big hill.

It was a high hill.

nootikatáʾAt wiiteešútš.
Then he climbed up it the young man.
wenačitáxA wenareewaawatíRA niiʾAhnawaraaNAsaaweewaáRA
While he lay on it as he looked all around where the wooded hillsides were
noowi- tipakUskAxá.
there was a clearing.
witIhaapá čéskoʾ tsu Ahnuh- nunané.
There were trees here and there but it was good land.
noowitaahwaáRIt táWIt NAhnunáhtš AhnihnuhwaawáʾA.
Then they were standing far off three deer their eating grass

– Then he examined it:– "I'll go this way.
teškúNIt itaWIsátA číkuʾ naahtehkuuwáNIt.
Close by if I get there I might kill one."

wehnuhnaačiríkUx noowitiraninuʾá.
As he watched them they became frightened.
áxkUx witeš- tAhweeraʾuúkUt.
One it fell over.
witiwíRIt.
It fell down.
kanawituxtaačeéʾA noowituu- NUhuníWIs sáhniš.
It was not long then he appeared a person.
nuu wehnaátA noowitiwísAt niiʾAhnaáxA NAhnunáhtš.
There when he went then he arrived where it lay the deer.
noowitiʾuuneéRIt wehnareewatíRA.
Then he stopped as he looked.
xuúhuniʾ kuwitireewáʾAt iiʾAhnačitáxA wiiteešútš.
This way he looked where he lay on top the young man.

kuwiteešaáʾA waaNAhčirikaʾaanít tiweNUs- taraʾó –
He was named Wakes The Hills Up this one whom I am talking about –
wenatuuniitIhú – wenačitáxA weNUtčiríkUx tinaaríči sáhniš.
my telling about him – as he lay on top of it as he watched him this person.

wituutUhuunapitaawaahaákuʾ.
He was swinging around and around.

He was appearing here and there where the woods were on the hillside.

And yonder was a hill with a cut bank.
nuu nikunoowiti- katáʾAt wehnarikataátA NAhnunáhtš.
There then he climbed that one as he carried it up the deer.
noowitIhunáhAs.
Then he disappeared.

tsu tiʾAhnačitaáxA wiiteešútš noowitiihUhtawi- raáʾAt.
But this one lying on top the young man then he ran down.
nuu noowitíʾAt niiwenakataátA wiítA weNUtčiríkUx tshunúxuʾ.
There then he went where he had climbed up the man the one he watched the scalped man.

nootiwísAt.
Then he got there.
noowitiroswá kanítš wehna-
They were lying around stones, where
kooxuučitAhuNAhwaawiiruutikú niiʾAhnaroswaáWI kanítš
he was stepping on them one above the other where they lay about the stones
weNAhkoótA kanaʾaaxíhneesš.
when he went his not wanting (anyone) to know.
a noowituhnakAstákUx.
And there was a tree root suspended.
noowituutá wehnuutaWI- šíhkUt a noowitireekaríkUs.
Then he did it: when he pulled on it, and then the door opened.

noowitIhuúkAt.
Then he went inside.
noowithuwaáʾAt na noowi- tIhuúkAt tinaaríčI wiiteešútš.
There was an entryway, and then he went inside this young man.
číkuʾ ahčirikaʾaanítkA wetatuuniítihuʾ.
Whether he awakened him I am telling about him.
noowitíʾAt wehnatawiraátA.
Then he went as he went down.
noo- witiraaWIškhaána naawiíšuʾ.
Then there was the smell of smoke smoke.
wehneswaatátA na inoowitiikáʾIt.
When he got to the end and there there was a fire.
na noowitiíkUx wiítA Ahnačiwaanoóku NAhnunáhtš wehnuxkootíkA.
And there he was sitting a man as he butchered it deer the one he killed.

noowitiwaákoʾ wah wetatiínaʾ.
Then he said: "Now I have come.
ka kunataraákIt.
Are you one of us?"

kukanawituunáwiʾ tiʾAhnaákUx.
He did not say anything this one sitting.
Ahnoowitinoo- čeéNAt Ahnuxčiwaanoóku.
He was just startled the one who was butchering it.

noowitiwaákoʾ wiiteešútš – tiweneetiínaʾ.
Then he said the young man – "I have come here now.
– ka  kunataraákIt.
– Are you one of us?
koxteewáNIt inookaneškuhwakunaasíhtš.
I will shoot you if you do not answer me."

witiwaákoʾ wiítA nuuʾAhnaákUx heeʾ kutata- raákIt.
He said man the one who sat there: "Yes, I am one of us.
wah AhneetuhneesšUxaánuʾ tAxiínaʾ.
Now I just had a premonition you are coming.
na neetuuNUxtaáwoʾ.
And then I doubted it.
a wetAxihwísaʾ na nuunaahé.
And now you have arrived and it is good.
nuunaahé tákuʾ šikaakAxiítI.
It is good: someone you are not with him.
wah šuxwiítIt.
Now sit down!
koosihnaakawáʾAs AxkunoóNIt.
You and I will eat together."

nooWIšiticiwaanookUxítIt AxkunoóNIt.
Then they (du) began to butcher together.
nooWIšititsastos- waáWI.
Then they (du) piled the meat around.
noowitiwaákoʾ tinaroósI tineešiniiniwiíkUx.
Then he said: "This one here is a pile for you."

witiRIšaatItkátA.
There was a rib over the fire.
wewitUsuxtAsáʾUx waaNAhčirikaʾaanít.
He was hungry now Wakes The Hills Up.

na noowitiwaákoʾ wah tatootAsšUxaánuʾ wenatooteéRIt.
And then he said: "Now I recognize you when I see you."

witiwaákoʾ wah nikukohnuúʾUt.
He said: "Now that must be.
kutaatAxaáʾA NAhtAsuu- pAhaátuʾ.
I am named Red Shield.
pakúhtuʾ tikUhunáhAs.
Long ago I died.
šitikukoótIt.
They killed me.
tsu ItkAxaánuʾ neekutkaapaačíštI tiNAtwaawanú.
But Night it did pity me as I go around here.
neetuhnee- siíšuʾ tiiháʾ tAxtAhnaanúʾAt teškúNIt.
I do know it here you're (pl) staying close by.
tatuhneesiíšuʾ.
I know it.
na neetiWIswooxuúkuʾ niinataraakítAt NAtkuwaawanú nataakuhnaapeerikú.
And I always go there where our village is my going around for me to see you (pl).
tsu kUšiNAxkuuteerikUxuukú wetatiínaʾ nanookaʾaátuʾ.
But your (pl) not usually seeing me, I come (as) a spirit.
wah na weneškUhunáx.
Now and you have now found me.
weneetAsšteehuúʾU.
Now I am thankful.
wah neešúxkUx.
Now stay!

wenakatistatateétIt – neesíhWA – aninahUsAhaanoótA.
"After it gets dark – we will go – where the valley extends.
wah šuxtaakičinaanuúna.
Now you (pl) hurry up!
šuxtaapóʾ.
You (pl) go!
weteeniwísaʾ paatúh.
Now they have arrived the enemy.
– xuúhuniʾ kunaaraánaʾ.
– This way they are coming
– uu tatiwískaʾ aatoo- tAhnaaʾiitawíhA aaxíhneesš paatúh
– Oh, I want that I might tell you (pl) that you know the enemy
tisaNIštaaNI- huúʾU.
there are many people.
xuúhuniʾ– wetaraánaʾ.
This way– they are coming.
tiíhéʾ – niiNAxtaraa- noótA na naahtakuwaʾá haáwaʾ.
Here – where you (pl) are staying and they come as a group also.
wah šuxtaah- naáNAt parúNIt.
Now you (pl) go on quickly!
xeeraačéʾ.
They'll count coup on you.
xeeraahnaanunáx.
They'll find you."

wah nooWIšitIhaakawáʾAs.
Now then they (du) ate.
na witikačíš.
And he was happy.

wah síšWA niiNAxtAhnaanoótA.
"Now let's go where you (pl) are camped!
IšWIsátA na neešiwaákoʾ – šitikuhniraánaʾ.
When you arrive and you will say – 'They are chasing me.
– parúNIt tooNUxtaah- nuuwáʾAx.
– Quickly let's run away!
xeeraahnaanunáx.
They might find us.
teškúNIt wetaraánaʾ paatúh.
Close by they are now coming the enemy.'"

a nooWIšitiihuuwiraáWA.
And then they (du) ran towards it.

nooWIšiteewísWA.
Then they (du) arrived.
waaNAhčirikaʾaanít noowitiwaákoʾ wah parúNIt tooNUxtaahnuuwáʾAx.
Wakes Up The Hills then he said: "Now, quickly let's run away!
– šuxtaakičinaanuúna.
– You (pl) hurry!
– šiti- kuhniraánaʾ paatúh.
– They are chasing me the enemy.
– šitikuuteéRIt.
– They saw me.
– parúNIt toxtaapóʾ.
– Quickly let's go!"

noowiteenaniwaátaʾ uunaraanoótA.
Then they arose those others (sitting).
noowitinaanuunawaáwaʾ niikohništanuhkáʾIt taakáxtš.
Then they left their things behind whatever things they had, dried meat.
noowitiinuuwáʾAx na tačé nawánuʾ.
Then they ran off and who was left?
noowiteeríhIt tshunúxuʾ wehnaʾaakoo- hátkA
Then he was alone the scalped man after he had fooled them,
wehnaWIskáʾA šikanaʾaxkuuhúNAx.
after he thought: 'You should not find me.'

noowitinikUxwísAt niiʾAhnatoxtaakitUhwaáhAt.
Then they ran to there where our villages were scattered.
taanikutuutAxítIt wehniinaaʾiitIhú.
"This is what happened," when they were telling of it.

wah– číkuʾ niikohnuutunaánuʾ– wiiteešútš waaNAhčirikaʾaanít
Now– sometime later– young man Wakes Up The Hills
noowitiwaákoʾ wah tuúxAt.
then he said: "Now let me go!
tuúxAt naawiinakuúnuʾ skána.
Let me go (on) the warpath alone!"

nikunoowituúta noowitikawátAt skaná wehnaátA naawiinakuúnuʾ.
Then he did that: then he went out alone when he went (on) the warpath.
nikuwewituutUhwiʾúʾ niiwehnaákUx weWIšitinaraaNIštáʾU NAhtAsuupAhaátuʾ.
He was headed that way where he was living the one he had befriended Red Shield.
nuu tiwísAt.
There he arrived.

wah – witiwaákoʾ wetatuhneesiíšuʾ – wetAxiínaʾ.
Now – he said: "I knew it: – you were coming.
wah wenuunaahé.
Now that's good.
wah šuxwiítIt.
Now sit down!
wah tiíNI híNAx koxtikawátAt čeésuʾ.
Now today at night (ie tonight) I will get out too.
teškúNIt tiitUhwaáhAt paatúh.
Close by the villages are enemy."

noowitiwaákoʾ heeʾ – xaawaarúxtiʾ tikoosšóʾ – číkuʾ čiitíʾIš uusuuxaWIstaanuúʾA.
Then he said: "Yes, – a horse I desire it, – some four even if they number."

wah koxtanuúta niiweNAxWIskáʾA.
"Now I will do it for you what you want.
wah axiká- watAt.
Now do not go out!
axeeWIsítIt.
Do not go outside!
taaneešuxkaákUx.
You stay inside here!"

nooWIšitIhaakawáʾAs.
Then they (du) ate a meal.
WIšitiwaawaʾá.
They (du) ate.

tinaákUx – wiiteešútš waaNAhčirikaʾaanít – witiwaákoʾ ka  naraáwiʾ
This – young man Wakes Up The Hills – he said: "Is it the case
– NAheešá híNAx – NAsIhkuuwáNA NAsIhkukaaʾišwáNA.
– tomorrow at night – that we go that we go home?"

noowitiwaákoʾ tinaákUx NAhtAsuupAhaátuʾ Axtóh číkuʾ  naakuuteéNA
Then he said this Red Shield: "Surely it will take days
číkuʾ pítkUx pítkUx na neešíʾAt.
perhaps two; two and you'll go.
tsu noowetAxiitáweʾ – wetAxiWIskáʾ – aatootapitaáhAt.
But you are now here – now you want – 'that I turn around.'
naraa- tawé na ihneésiš taanikuwetAxuúta.
It may be that they will find out this is what you did:
Axtóh teškúNIt – tiihíʾ.
surely close by – it is.
kaakuxtaačeéʾA – weNAxiína naawiinakuúnuʾ.
It has not been a long time – our coming (on) the warpath.
tsu pítkUx kooxooté na neešeewásAt.
But two you will pass the days and then you will finally go.
natsú kooxtiraaneewaáhAs.
But I will ready everything."

tinaákUx – tshunúxuʾ nootikawátAt – NAhtAsuupAhaátuʾ.
This – scalped man then he went out – Red Shield.

noowewitAheešAhíštA noowewitIhuúkAt.
Then it was about to be morning then he went inside.
witikAhíNIt a noowitiwaákoʾ wah šuuxiriwátAt.
He made a fire and then he said: "Now get up!
tuuneešinihwaáRIt xaawaarúxtiʾ.
Yours stand over there horses.
tuuneewaraakawaáRIt niiNAxIskáʾA.
They are standing over there in the brush the ones you wanted.
nawáh čiitíʾIš xaawaarúxti nikuwetatotwaaʾuuneeričít.
Now four horses I have stood those for you.

natsú xaawačIhkatít – wetatskáʾ – natihnaáʾU wiináxtš na
"But the black pinto – I want it – my child the boy and
natiiNAhtakúʾU nikUšiNAxkunuusiRAxWIsátA číkuʾ šiNIhkuhnaahunuuwaaNAxikú.
my wife for you to take that one to them (du) there that they have it perform deeds (lit find things) for them (du).
tuhné tinaaríčI xaawačIhkatít.
It is nice looking this black pinto.
wah tiiháʾ nikuwetAtwískaʾ čeésuʾ NAxkukunuutaáNA.
Now here this is what I now want yourself for you to do for me."

noowitiwaákoʾ tinaákUx waaNAhčirikaʾaanít wah Axtóh nikukooxuúʾUt.
Then he said this Wakes Up The Hills: "Now truly it will be that way.
koxtuúta.
I will do it."

na witIhé pítkUx.
And it was days two.
wah suúxAt.
"Now go!"

nooWIšiteewáʾ AxkunoóNIt.
Then they (du) came on together.
WIšituutaaksiRAxá xaawaarúxtiʾ niikohnuuxítAt.
They (du) took them the horses wherever the village was.
noošitiwísWA na tshunúxuʾ NAhtAsuupAhaátuʾ noowituutapítaahAt.
Then they (du arrived and the scalped one Red Shield then he turned back.
waaNAhčirikaʾaanít witehniwísAt xaawaarúxtiʾ.
Wakes Up The Hills he arrived with them the horses.

wewiwitinaahukoosiíwat taanikuneetuúta.
Now he told about his own bravery: "This is what I did do.
číkuʾ tehnuxtAhpaaniíšAt sanánat.
Some must have gone on a hunt Sioux.
nooniiraanúʾAt.
Then they camped here.
taanikuneetuúta neetiniiNAhnanáʾAx.
This is what I did do: I ran off with them."

wah wehnunaaʾiiwaátI atsú tinaaríčI xaa- wačIhkatít
Now when he was telling the story: "But this black pinto
xaawaarúxtiʾ tinaákUx wiináxtš wetatinihkaapaátš.
horse this boy mine is pitiful.
hiʾáxtiʾ wekaakíʾ.
His father now he is not.
na šáxtiʾ šinakučiri- koówa xaawaarúxtiʾ tinawaawaaríčI
And his mother their (du) looking at them horses these various ones
NAxtAhnanuh- koóčI.
their belonging to you (people).
wah tsu nikuwešitatUtkaapaačíštI tišinaákUx tinaaríčI xaawačIhkatít nikUšiNIhkuhnaahunuuwaaNAxikú.
Now tsu I'm going to pity them (du) these (du) this black pinto for it to work (lit find things) for them (du)."

noowitiraatariíʾIs nikunoowituúta nooWIšitiʾú.
It was a short while, then that is what he did: then he gave it to them (du).

atsú tuunaákUx NAhtAsuupAhaátuʾ nikuweneeroohUhka- roókuʾ.
But this other one Red Shield that one was making plans.

na wituxtaanaaNIhuúʾu tinaákUx waaNAhčirikaʾaanít
And there were many times this Wakes Up The Hills
AhnuxtaahunuuwaaNAxú niiwenaákUx.
his having found many things where he (Red Shield) lived.

noowitiinaaxihUxítIt.
Then he became ill.

wah – waaNAhčirikaʾaanít – wenaʾaanú – wiítA –
Now – Wakes Up The Hills – when he was becoming – a man, –
wenaʾaanú kuNAhúx noowitiwaákoʾ tatuhnaanaʾíhkuʾ
when he was becoming an old man then he said: "I am telling it
nataraakáNIt na – ačitaánuʾ – tiNAxtAhnaanoótA.
we who are related and – tribe – these of you here.
wetAxuhnaahneesiíšuʾ wetatuxtaahunuuwaanáx naaheeraáʾuʾ.
You all know it: I have found many things nice things.
kaakikuuNUxtaačitee- waahnúʾ.
Nothing was difficult for me.
wah koxtohnaahnaaʾiitáWI.
Now I will tell you (pl).
kaakatuhnáʾA.
I was not the cause.
kukaakatíštaʾ uunariišiítuʾ.
It was not my doing my own.
tAxuhnaahneesiíšuʾ NAhtAsuupAhaátuʾ tIhunáhAs.
You have known about it: Red Shield he died.
wetiraačeéʾA.
It was a long time ago.
wah tatunáx.
Now I found him
– tatuuxunáx.
– I found him
– taanikuneetuuxWIswooxuúkuʾ číkuʾ we- NAtkoótA weNAtkuraaNAxweétA.
– That is where I used to go whenever I went when I went off to look for things.
nikuneekuusuxtaahunuuwaanaáxuʾ.
He is the one who was finding things for me.
wah – tinaaríčI – xaawačIhkatít– natuuxúhA – tinaákUx
Now – this – black pinto– the one I gave to her – this
sápat tinaákUx hiʾáxtiʾ nikutúxta.
woman, this one his father he had that one.
niku- tiíšu.
He gave him that one.
atsú kuwitíʾ neetuxtaaʾuúhuʾ.
But I appear ed (ie pretended) to be giving it to him.
natsú tiraačítA weNAhnaaʾiitawíhA tikuusuxtaaʾiitáWI kanaNAtkuuniítI.
But it is the reason my telling it: he told me that I not tell on him.

wah tsu wekohnóʾ kuNAhúx niitiwenatuútA.
"Now but he must now be an old man as I now am.
wah wetAxuhnaaneésiš NAhtAsuupAhaátuʾ nikutaroohunaawáʾ
Now you (pl) know it: Red Shield he did all those things
niitiwenatsuuxaawaáNA – wenikuxteešaanaáNA – tiwenatux- tawé.
these things that I did – when I became a chief – while I lived among you.
hawá wetataraahnaanuunawaáhuʾ.
Also now I am leaving you (pl).
atsú taaniku- tiíkUx.
But this is where he lives.
taanikutatuuxunáx NAhtAsuupAhaátuʾ.
This is where I found him Red Shield."

wah– tsu– nooxAhtakúʾU– sápat – noowitiwaákoʾ čiraá šii-
Now– but– his wife– the woman – then she said: "Let u s go
siiteeríšAt NAhtAsuupAhaátuʾ.
to see him Red Shield."

noowitiraáNAt nuu weNAhunaaniitáWI niiʾAh- núxkUx waaNAhčirikaʾaanít.
Then they went there after he told the place where he lived Wakes Up The Hills.
noowitiRAhwísAt.
Then they arrived.
noowitireeka- kUxaakaarákUx.
Then the door was wide open.
– pakúhtuʾ číkuʾ witaáNAt.
– Long ago he must have gone elsewhere
– šaahka- wátAt.
– He had got out.
číkuʾ oopiínuʾ kunohneekánoʾ.
Some different he had built a dwelling.
na noowi- tuutakáʾIt niiʾAhnuxwaawaákA wiítA
And then he left things as he had said the man
waaNAhčirikaʾaanít taanikutuúʾUt.
Wakes Up The Hills: "This is the way it is.
– taanikutsunaaNAhuúnuʾ.
– This is how the land lies.
– taaniku- tuhneekakUxwiʾuúʾIt.
– This is how the door is situated."

wah nikunooWIšituúta šikanawitihnunáx.
Now then they did that: they did not find him.
wehna- RAhčíkAt nooteeRAhkaaʾišwáʾ.
After they mourned then they came home.

tsu – tinaákUx wiítA – waaNAhčirikaʾaanít wewitIhunáhAs.
But – this man – Wakes Up The Hills he died.
wewitikót.
He died.
tsu tinaákUx tshunúxuʾ wituxwanúʾ.
But this scalped man he lived.
wituxwaa- RUxtíʾ kanaʾAhnuuNUxtaačiteewaahnú.
He was holy things not being difficult for him.

nawáh taanikunootiraaʾiitúxAt.
Now this is the end of the story.
