by the Bighorn Sheep

wah tatunaaʾiitíštA šinikuusuxtaaʾiitawíhA AhnuuxunuuwaaWIhú
Now I am going to tell a story what they told me the ones who lived
nuu naapakúhtuʾ.
long , long ago.
šineekunuunaaʾít áxkUx niiháʾ iiNAhunaanúhAt saátI
They told me one there that land passing Santees
aNAhunuuwaáWI hunaanap- síniʾ.
where they lived (in) the south.
wah Axtóh kanatuhneesiíšuʾ niikohniíhiʾ noowi- tiisunaanaʾíhkuʾ shuutUhkatawóx.
Now surely I do not know wherever it was: there they meant the place a blow hole (lit wind going up).
noowitikoohaahpanít AhnuhnunaneéRA.
It was level land its being nice land.
kanawitíʾ nakuhneésš niiʾAhniihiíʾU noowiteeNUhuniiwíʾIs noowitiihuunaahkáʾAt.
One does n ot know where it is located, then it suddenly occurs then one falls into it.
štoh noowi- teenuhkataráʾ.
Again then one is flung up.
nuukuwitaahkoohaahkaʾuúkUt nooNAhunuuwaáWI wáRUx
It lands over there on the level ground the ones roaming around rabbits,
sčiríhtš číkuʾ witiNAhkiihuuNAsakawaníkA.
coyotes, whatever accidentally befalls it.
NAhkUhaah- kaátA noowiteeNUhkataráʾ štoh.
When it goes into the hole then it is pushed up again.
číkuʾ nuukuwiteenawáNIt.
It is thrown somewhere over there.

kanawitiisuxteesiíšuʾ wah tákuʾ niikohnuhneésiš.
They did not know about it now whoever found out about it.
wituxtAhWIswooxuúkuʾ AhnuuxunuuwaaWIhú naawiinakuúnuʾ AhnuuxIhtakUhunuuwaaWIhú.
They used to go there when they went around (on) the hunt when they were roving around in a group.
tákuʾ noowitíʾAt kanaNAhkuuraahuuniiNIšikú.
Someone then he went one who was skeptical.
nakuraatawé číkuʾ šinehkuʾiitúNAx wáRUx NAhkuúxA
Sometimes they found a dead body a rabbit when it lay there
číkuʾ niikunehkuuNAhuunuúʾA nehkii- hUhkataráʾa huutuúnuʾ.
whatever happened to it when it was flung out by it the wind.
noowitihkoótIt.
Then it was killed.
hawá sčiríhtš noowitihkoótIt.
Also a coyote then it was killed.
číkuʾ AxkaáʾA NAhkiihuunaah- kaátA anuú kuwiteeNAxtAhweeroohaásAt.
Some antelope when it would fall into it, there it was thrown on its back over there.

wah tinaákUx wiiteešútš noowituutiriiwaápI sAhuútš.
Now this young man then he folded it up a robe.
nootiihuunaahkawáNIt niiʾAhnaahunaahnatáWI.
Then he threw it down into it where the hole was.
wewiti- raačeéʾA AhnaaríčI AhnoowituuNUhuníWIs sAhuútš AhnuuxaahkawaníkA.
It was a while his standing then it just quickly appeared robe the one he had thrown down into it.
nuukuwitaahkoohaahkaʾuúkUt.
It landed on the flat ground way over there.

noowitinihnaateeʾá.
Then he came to like it.
nikuwewituutaánuʾ.
Now that is what he was doing.

noowituutAhnaaʾiitawaawihUxítIt.
Then he began telling them about it.
číkuʾ teškúNIt tehnuuxitúhkUx.
Somewhere close by the village must have been.
nikunoowitihneésiš NAhkuRAhwó.
That is how they found out about it when they were going (by).

wah áxkUx wiítA nuu witíʾAt.
Now one man there he went.
noowititkAxtiRAxítIt niihéʾ– niiʾAhnaahunaahnatáWI Ahnawánu.
Then he began to fast there– where the hole was as he went around.
wewitiinaa- ninóʾ.
Now they were afraid.

The other one then he went as he fasted.

wah niikohnuutAxítIt kaakatuhneesiíšuʾ niihéʾ– šiʾee- nutkaapaatštíRA.
Now whatever happened I do not know there– whether they blessed him.
číkuʾ niitehnuúʾUt nawáh tinaákUx wiítA
It must have been something now this man
kananuuNUhuniwaáRA kanaNUstaruuwanuúxU.
the one who had bad ways the one who was always hateful.

wah suúnaaxuʾ wewituhnunáhAs AhneenuuxIhtakúʾU.
Now a young woman hers had died her husband who was.

then he married her this woman.

Also then it was not good: then he began to dislike him her son.

He looked for a way that there be an accident 'for me to kill him.'

wah niihéʾ– nikuwitiíhiʾ wehnaahtakuúwo wehnaraanátA.
Now there– it was there when the group was traveling when they went.

noowitiwaákoʾ– tinaákUx wiítA anuuháʾ tatuxkoótIt NAhnunáhtš.
Then he said– this man: "Over there I killed it a deer.

nikuwitiwaawaakaáhuʾ weniniinaaʾiitIhú sápat.
That is what he was saying as he was telling her the woman.

wah tinaákUx sápat kanaNAhkuhneesšú tinaákUx wiítA
Now this woman, her not knowing it this man

It pulled a travois.
nuu witiwísAt niiʾAh- niihiíʾU tsástš.
There he arrived where it was the meat.

Then it took it home the meat.

tsu tinaákUx noowitsiráxAt.
But this one then he led him.

"Look, this is where it happens!"

noowituutiriiwaápI sAhuútš.
Then he folded it up a robe.

Then he threw it in- to the hole.
wewitiraačeéʾA sAhuútš nuukuwiteena- wáNIt.
Now it was awhile the robe it was thrown way over there.
