Baby Chief and the Two Holy Men

Now I will tell a story also.
tiraaʾiitUxpakút nuu naapakúhtuʾ wehnaRAhwaʾá.
It is an old story long , long ago when we were coming.
niikohniíhiʾ Axtóh kanatuhneesiíšuʾ.
Wherever it was surely I don't know.

na wiiNAxtšukaapaačíšuʾ witiíkUx iiNAhkiitúhkUx
And a poor boy he lived where the village was
iiʾAhnatoxtaakitUhwaáhAt wiiNAxtšukaapaačíšuʾ
where our villages used to be scattered, the poor boy
tákuʾ wekananaakunúhkUx wenakutakaahuúNU wačéh
his having no one (relatives) his being poor, the poor thing,
weNAhkiisAhkaʾaáhNA NAhkUhuupaawanú atsú
when he went about the village when he went into lodges but
šikananihkaaNUhkaroóku číkuʾ niiNAhkUhuukátA niiNAhkUtkaaheé- NA WIšitihkaanunoókuʾ.
as they cooked for him wherever he went in where he spent the night they fed him.
na číkuʾ nuukunoowitíʾAt.
And then he went somewhere else.
nikuwituutaánuʾ.
That is what he was doing.
witikaapaátš wačéh.
He was pitiful, the poor thing.

na neešaánuʾ niiʾAhneešaáNU wiítA AhnačitawíʾU
And the chief one who was chief, man who was leader,
witirá suúnaaxuʾ.
he had her a young woman.
uu wituhné suunaaxuni- waaraáʾuʾ.
Oh, she was beautiful a beautiful young woman.
na witiraaNIhuúʾU šinehkuhtawaáto wiiteešútš tákuʾ
And there were many the ones who wanted her young men one
aasihtíRA suúnaaxuʾ.
'that we be together' the young woman.
na kanawitiwískaʾ tinaákUx hiʾáxtiʾ.
And he did not want it this one her father.
aa kaakátskaʾ tákuʾ šiʾaaxiitíRA tákuʾ šiNAxkuutíRA.
"Ah, I do not want that you be together with someone for you to be with someone.
wetatostaáWAt áxkUx wiítA iišiNAxkuutíRA čeésuʾ
I've selected for you one man for you (du) to be together too."

Then she said this young woman: "Now quickly make haste!

Tell me who he is!"

noowitiwaákoʾ wačéh tinawanú wiináxtš
Then he said: "Poor thing this one going around boy
natakaahuúNU nakaapaačíšU nikuwetatskáʾ axkut-
the poor one the pitiful one, that's the one I want that
kaákUx kUxtaweésuʾ niiNItkuraahIšáxku.
you be my in-law, (my) son-in-law the one I want to call mine.
tákuʾ wekaakanúhkUx.
He has no one (ie no relatives).
aa nootatuutAsškaapaátš wačéh NItkuuteerikú.
Ah, I just feel sorry for him, poor thing, when I see him."

This young woman then she sat down.
noowitiwaákoʾ šeenoowešitatotkáxaʾ tiweNAxiína.
Then she said: "We purposefully called you your coming here.
atináʾ na atíʾAx wešitiWIskáʾ naáxU NAsakukuučituuʾaáNA
My mother and father they (du) want you for us to marry
NAxkukohta- kúʾU nataakuuraahtíRA.
for you to be my husband for all of us to be together.
tákuʾ tiwekananaa- xiníhkUx skaná tiweNAxkiisAhkaʾaáhNA
Since you have no one, alone since you go around in the village,
atináʾ na atíʾAx šineewískaʾ nikuNAsIhkuutíRA.
my mother and my father they (du) want that you and I be together."

wewituutáxkUx wiiteešútš.
He sat there pondering the young man
heeʾ.
"Yes.
wačéh Axtóh tAtkaapaátš.
Poor thing, indeed I am pitiful."

noowitiwaákoʾ tinaákUx suúnaaxuʾ wah číkuʾ kaakuú- ʾUt.
Then she said this young woman: "Now that does not matter.
koosíhtI.
We will be together."

na nikunoowituúta nooWIšitičituuʾá tinaákUx
And then that is what she did: then they (du) got married this
piiraasštawíʾuʾ piiraneešaánuʾ suúnaaxuʾ na tinaákUx wiiNAxtšukaapaačíšuʾ.
favored child the chief's child the young woman and this poor boy.
weWIšitiítI.
Now they were together.

noowiteenaaniwakAhuutáʾ WIhtikúxuʾ neešaánuʾ natanuunaákUx
Then he called out to them the crier: "The chief ours
natakuraakiRAxaáhNA wešititkaawiítIt.
our leader he now has a son-in-law.
kUxtaweésuʾ wetanúhkUx.
A son-in-law he now has.
wačéh tinuuxIsAhkaʾaáh- NA
Poor thing this one who goes around the village
wiiNAxtšukaapaačíšuʾ nikuwešitiítI.
the poor boy that is the one she is with.
wešitičituuʾá.
They (du) married.
wah wetIhaananíkUx wiiNAxtšukaapaačíšuʾ.
Now he is married the poor boy."

uu witiraataʾiíʾIt tineetuunoótA atsú wiiteešútš
Oh, they were all happy this village but young men
witiraaNIhuúʾU NAhkoosštAhunaáhWI.
there were many each having his eye on her.
noowitihwáčiʾ číkuʾ niinooNAhkuútA axkoohtakúʾU iitakaahuúNU.
Then they said: "I wonder why it is 'that you would marry me' if he is poor?"
nikuwewitihwaawačeéhuʾ.
That is what they were all saying.

nooWIšitiitakánoʾ akAhpaátu.
Then they put up a lodge for them (du) a tipi.
WIši- tihnaanoswaáWI natš taakáxtš.
They put them up for them (du) wood, dried meat.
wewituutakanee- NAhkatákUx tineetuunoótA neešaánuʾ wehnitkaákUx.
The lodge stood out in front this village the chief his son-in-law.

wah nuuháʾ wetataraapóʾ.
"Now over there we are going.
wetataraakIhtakuúwoʾ.
We are going as a group.
wetataraakAhuúkuʾ.
We are going to move out."

wah noowewitinoswaakároʾ niišinehkuhtaawoóhA.
Now then they took things the things they gave them (du).
nooWIšituuNUhuuniíWIs.
Then they (du) were left behind.
nooWIšitIhatUhkáWA niiweNAhkohtakuúwo
Then they (du) went behind where they were migrating
šiNAhkuwáNA skána.
when they (du) were going alone.
tičé šinára xaawaarúxtiʾ.
They (du) had none a horse.

nooWIšitiwísWA niiweNAhkiitúhkUx.
Then they (du) arrived where the village was.
inooWI- šitanuunáka štoh.
There they (du) had a lodge again.
wah tiwešineešiniináka.
"Now here is your tent.
wešita- toonaaNAhuuwísAt.
We have completed everything for you."

nooWIšitIhuúpA.
Then they (du) entered.
tinaákUx suúnaaxuʾ nooWIšiti- tikaanunookUxítIt.
This young woman then she began to cook for themselves (du).

nikuWIšituutaánuʾ.
That is what they (du) were doing.

wah niikohnuxtItkhaáʾA noowitiwaákoʾ tinaákUx wiináxtš wah čiraátoʾ ItkatáʾAt.
Now whatever night it was then he said this boy: "Now perhaps I'll go up.
tuxkatáʾAt iinaahwaá- kUx.
Let me go up that hill in the distance!
tuxteewaawátI.
Let me look around!"

noowitiwaáko suúnaaxuʾ nawáh.
Then she said the young woman: "Now."

nootiihuuwiraáʾAt tinaákUx wiináxtš.
Then he ran this boy.
nuu tikatáʾAt.
There he went up.

nooWIšiteewáʾ pítkUx wiítA.
Then they (du) came two men.
heeʾ šitatíʾ.
"Yes, it is we (du).
wenaaxitunaáhNA -- neešaánuʾ weNAxUtkaawiítIt -- wetAxčitáwiʾ.
You who have the village -- the chief you who are his son-in-law -- you are leader now.
wetaaxitúna.
You have the village.
nikUšitatuhnáʾA.
We are the ones who are the cause.
šitatootsškaapaátš niiNAxuuxIsAhkaʾaáhNA kaapaačíšuʾ.
We felt sorry for you where you went around in the village poor(ly).
wah nikU- šitatuhnáʾA niitiwenuútA weNAxaananiwiítIt.
Now we are the reason how it is when you got married.

wah tiíNI híNAx niiretkAxítIt aa
"Now tonigh t when everyone sleeps, ah,
neešiišiinanuúwaʾ šinoxtaawoóhA taakáxtš
you'll bring all your things what they (people) have given you, dried meat,
čituúʾuʾ niinoonakuuraáʾU tinaákuʾ šinoxtaawoóhA.
everything whatever they are, guns, what they gave you.
neešiišiinakanáʾ.
You'll bring the lodge.
wah wešitatootakanóxtA.
Now we are going to make you a dwelling.
wah niiraaniruuWAtwaáhAt nookanaaxeéka.
Now when they all get up there won't be a lodge.
na šikaneeniinakAhnuNAxíštA.
And they are not going to find the dwelling.

wah nikUšiisuúxa.
"Now you (du) do that!
šiišuuxičinaanuúna saxtš nikatii- siʾaáNA niiretkAxítIt.
You (du) hurry as soo n as it gets dark when everyone is sleeping!
wah tsu wešitatootIsštatatooháxtA.
Now but we are going to help you."

wiináxtš nuu nootikaaʾiíšAt.
The boy there then he went home.
nootIhuúkAt nii- ʾAhnaákUx naahtakúʾU suúnaaxuʾ.
Then he entered where she was his wife the young woman.
nootuhnaaʾiitáWI.
Then he told her.

noowitiwaákoʾ aráh taanikuwetsiitaáništA nii- retkAxítIt
Then he said: "Oh my, this is what we shall do: when everyone sleeps
tiíNI híNAx– a niiNAseenunuuNIhtakUhunoswaáWI čituúʾuʾ koosiinanaaWIsíruutIt.
tonigh t,– and all of our belongings everything we will take them out.
nuuháʾ weteéka.
There there is a lodge.
koosíhWA.
We will go.
nikuwetsihWAhúhtA.
That is where we are going to go.
na čituúʾuʾ niraáhWA nehtakúwo tsu taanikunoosíhkUx.
And all when they go off when the group goes but we'll stay here.
kaakAsihWAhúhtA číkuʾ.
We won't go anyw here.

noowitiwaákoʾ suúnaaxuʾ wah nootatuutsšúʾ.
Then she said the young woman: "Now then I am satisfied.
nikukooxuúʾUt.
It will be that way.
koosiíta.
We will do it."

noowitiretkAxítIt.
Then everyone went to sleep.
wehniiNItkawaáWA WIšitiiriWAtwaáhAt.
After they were all sleeping they (du) arose.
WIšitehtakUhuNAsačiwaápi.
They (du) gathered their belongings.

Oh, they (du) began carrying their belongings.
nuuháʾ noowitihUshaanúʾAt.
There there was a valley.
witihUshaahwičeéʾIs.
It was a deep valley.
nuu witiwaraá- kUx.
There there was a stand of trees.
nooWIšitiroswaáWI.
Then they (du) put their things down.

na inoowiteéka anuú šohnaanunuuNUxakaáWI.
And there there was a lodge there their (du) dwelling that had been.
nuu witeekAhnaáhkA.
There the lodge was at the bottom.
nooWIšitIhaahkaʾíšWA.
Then they (du) went down below.

tišinaákUx wiítA nooWIšitiwaákoʾ šooxikAhíNIt kutiraáNIš
These (du) men then they (du) said: "Don't make a fire until (lit it is true)
čituúʾuʾ niRAhwáNA nehtakuúwo.
all when they go when they go as a group!
kuneešiišikAhíNIt híNAx.
Then you (du) will make a fire at night.
šooxikAhíNIt.
Don't make a fire!
nooNUsúx.
Don't let it be!"

nooWIšitohneewáʾus.
Then they (du) went to bed.

uu witiraačeéʾA wehnihneésš.
Oh, it was a long time when they found out.
noowitiwakaanaweewáNIt wešohniiNAxwé.
Then the echo of their voices was plain when they looked for them (du).
noowitiiNAhnaačiteeʾá.
Then it was difficult for them.
noošikanawitihnunáx.
Then they did not find them (du).
witiwakaanawiʾoóxIt wehnaahtakuúwo weh- naraanátA
Then the sound became inaudible as they were moving out as they went,
wehnaahtakuúwo niiwekohnaraáhWA.
as they were moving out wherever they were going.

tinaaríčI wiiteešútš noowitiwaákoʾ čeétoʾ Ahneewaáta.
This young man then he said: "Let me just look!"

nuu witikatáʾAt wehnareewaawáti.
Then he went up (a hill) as he looked all around.
uu witeekUxkhaanuúʾaʾ.
Oh, there was the former campground.
čéskoʾ tákuʾ kanawitii- wánuʾ.
Not at all there was no one around.
nootitawiraáʾAt.
Then he went down (the hill).

noowitiwaákoʾ wah siškhíNIt.
Then he said: "Now let's make a fire!"
witikhíNIt.
He made a fire.
witiiwaaruusItkUxítIt taakáxtš.
He began to roast it dried meat.
wah witikatistatateétIt.
Now it got dark.
noowituhnáʾAt nátš tinaákUx wiináxtš.
Then he went after it wood this boy.

nooWIšiteewáʾ aNIšináʾU wiítA pítkUx štoh.
Then they (du) came those (du) men two again.
witiwaákoʾ wah neešAhpiiráʾuʾ– wešitatohnaaʾiitawíštA.
He said: "Now Baby Chief,– we are going to tell you.
uu NAxiNAhtakúʾU tatskáʾ nakuraahanáʾU neščiraánuʾ
Oh, your wife we want for her to boil fresh corn,
ničiiša- naáxuʾ.
roasted sweet corn.
na WAhúx.
And squash.
nikUšitikukaaNAsšóʾ.
That is what we want to eat.
na atikAhunaánuʾ.
And ground beans.
šuxkaanúnoʾ.
Cook a meal!

xaátš šitAxtá.
"A dog you (du) have it.
na šitIhaxtawikúx.
You (du) must tie it up.
šooxiiʾít.
Don't turn it loose!"

nawáh tinaákUx wiináxtš nooteeriwísaʾ nátš.
Now this boy then he brought it a stick.
witiwaákoʾ štoh nikatiisiʾaáNA wetatskáʾ NAxkuraa- hanáʾU
He said: "Again when it gets dark I want for you to boil them
ničiišanaáxuʾ– na WAhúx na atikAhunaánuʾ tinaroswaáWI.
sweet corn– and squash and ground beans these things.
nooNUxtaákUx tsástš taakáxtš.
Leave them out meat, dried meat!
nooNUsuu- xUhuúʾU.
Let them be for now!
atíʾAx pítkUx wešitawaahíštA.
My fathers two they (du) are going to come.
šiNIhaakawáʾAs.
They (du) will eat.
šitikaaNAsšóʾ ničiíšuʾ ničiiša- naáxuʾ na WAhúx.
They (du) want to eat corn, roasted sweet corn, and squash.
na nakaánus huúʾ.
And chokecher ry pudding.
wah nikU- šineekaasšóʾ.
Now that is what they (du) want to eat."

noowitiwaákoʾ suúnaaxuʾ Axtóh tAhnanuhkáʾIt.
Then she said young woman: "Surely I have everything.
nikukooxuúʾUt.
It will be that way."

wah witikatiisiʾá štoh na tinaákUx suúnaaxuʾ
Now it got dark again, and this young woman
noowitiraahánoʾ ničiišanaáxuʾ WAhúx na atikA-
then she boiled them roasted sweet corn, squash, and ground
hunaánuʾ.– uu witikatiisiʾá.
beans.– Oh, it got dark.
witeeWIsítIt.
He went out.
witireewaáta na inooWIšitehwáʾ.
He looked and there they (du) came at a distance.

hee neešAhpiiráʾuʾ.
"Hey, Baby Chief!"

noowitiwaákoʾ neešAhpiiráʾuʾ sikooxIhaakawáʾAs.
Then he said Baby Chief: "You (du) will eat."

Axtóh wetunaahé.
"Truly it's good.
kaakooNAsáʾUx.
You're not hungry.
číkuʾ šooxíWA.
Don't go anywhere!
taakunoošooxiíkUx.
You (du) stay here!
kaakíʾ šinaakuNAsáʾUx.
You (du) won't be hungry.
kaakíʾ ši- naakUhúNAx.
They won't find you (du).
kaakíʾ tákuʾ naakUhúNAx.
No one will find you.
šikaakAhuNAxíštA.
They won't find you."

hee WIšitaaWIswáʾ.
Oh, they (du) arrived.
nooWIšitihkaanúnoʾ na nooWIšitiwaawaaNIšítIt uu
So they (du) were fed by them (du) and then they (du) began to eat, oh,
wešinawáʾA WAhúx niinuuxIskáʾA.
as they (du) ate squash what he wanted.

hee Axtóh tunaakaanuné tiwešinataakawáʾAs.
"Hey, truly the meal is good what we have eaten here.
nawáh šiitúxWA.
Now let's go!
kaakIhunaahpaatú.
It is not enemy territory
tákuʾ kaakiwaa- wanúʾ.
There is no one going around.
tsu tiiháʾ šitátkUx čeésuʾ.
But here we live too."
nikuWIšitiwaa- waakaáhuʾ šohnuhnoosaruuwaahatkú
That is what they (du) were saying as they (du) were making her forget things
suúnaaxuʾ tinaákUx kanaʾaaxuhneésš.
young woman this 'that you would not know.'

wah skurúxuʾ wešitAtkaawačiíʾIt.
"Now, daughter-in-law, we are full now.
wah šii- túxWA.
Now we will go!"
nooWIšiteeWIsíruutIt.
Then they (du) went out.

wah tiwenapsiʾátA weNAhunaanapsiʾaanuuxukú nuu
Now as winter passed when the land usually becomes cold there
wehnaahtakUhunuuwaáWI nii hiʾáxti na šáxtiʾ
when the group was traveling, where his father and his mother
neešaánuʾ šohnatáwe wehnaa- wiRIstaʾaanuuxítIt nooWIšitaaWIswáʾ.
the chief their (du) being among them when it began to be spring then they (du) came.

witiwaákoʾ aráh wetaahtakuwaʾaáhuʾ anuú nuxtaa- nátA nuu skaweéraaʾuʾ.
He said: "Say, the camp is coming back there those who went there west.
wetaraánaʾ Ištóh.
They are coming back.
taani- kuniinaataraʾóʾ nakiitUhwiítIt štoh tiihéʾ niinuuxitúhkUx.
This is what they are talking about to make camp again here where the village was."

wah NAheešá neešikákAt nakaaNUstaákuʾ na neeširiškarookUxítIt.
"Now tomorrow you'll cut it a chokecherry bush, and you'll begin making arrows.
tinaákUx suúnaaxuʾ tirií- ʾux.
This young woman she knows how.
šištaaNIhúnoʾ.
Make many!
wah wešitsinapanikúxtA tanáhaʾ.
Now we're going to shoot them buffalo.
na neešičiiwaakároʾ.
And you will butcher them.
tsu šikoxtootIštatatoohaákuʾ pítkUx niiheéNA saxtš šuutaaNIštaátA.
But we will be helping you two when days have passed as soo n as you finish doing it."

tinaákUx wiiteešútš noowitikakAtkUxítIt nátš nakaaNUstaákuʾ.
This young man then he began to cut them wood chokecherry bush.
noowitiriškarookUxítIt.
Then he began to make arrows.
uu kanawi- tuuneešawíhAx.
Oh, there was a great number!

a witiwaákoʾ wiítA áxkUx wešinehkuWIswaʾá
And he said man one: "When they come here,
waxtóh wetiraaNIhuúʾU.
now truly there are plenty.
wetiitaNAsáʾUx aninaraána.
They are hungry the ones coming.
číkuʾ wekaakihnaahunaawísAt wenaahtakuwaáhu.
They did not find anything when they were coming.

wah hináxtIt na šikaakikAhíNIt.
"Now in the morning don't make a fire.
wešitAxuutaakee- ríštA taanaraanuusaʾiišá tanáhaʾ.
Now you're going to see them when they come down the coulee here the buffalo.
wešitsiinapanikúxtA.
We are going to be shooting them.
tinaákUx šikaakikAhíNIt hináxtIt.
This one do not make a fire in the morning."

uu tanáhaʾ kanawituuneešawíhAx AhnaaRAsawiraawaʾá.
Oh, buffalo there was a multitude when they came down.
tinaákUx wiiteešútš witeepanikUxítIt.
This young man he began to shoot them.
hawá witiwii- náhAt.
Also he knocked them down.
wah nuuhéʾ šohnahNAhwanikú uu noowewitiʾiinaanúʾAt.
Now there the ones that they had shot, oh, then the carcasses were strewn around.

noowitiwaákoʾ wah wetiRAhkatáʾAt tanáhaʾ.
Then he said: "Now they went up (the hill) the buffalo.
nuu wewitiʾiínos.
There the carcasses now lie."

wah nikunooWIšituúta.
Now that is what they (du) did:
tišinawaaríčI wiiteešútš na suúnaaxuʾ nooWIšitičiiwaakarookUxítIt.
these (du) young man and young woman then they (du) started butchering them.
tsu tišinawaaríčI wiítA šikaakatutuuNAxaaNIsiíšuʾ niišikoh- nuuxAxaawaáʾA.
But these (du) men I do not know their (du) names, whatever their (du) names were.
wah wetuutaaNIsšteehuúʾU tsástš.
"Now it is finished the meat."
witiisaaNIštát wehniščiiwaakaráʾU.
They finished doing it their butchering.

nawáh nooWIšitíWA niišikohnuhwanuuxuúkuʾ
Now then they (du) left wherever it was that they (du) used to stay
tišinawáNA wiítA.
these (du) going men.
wah wešitátWA.
"Now we are going.
wah neešAhpiiráʾuʾ wetAxinihkaá- niš.
Now, Baby Chief, you have plenty
wah wetaahtakuwaahíštA.
Now the group is coming.
wetaahtakuWIswaahíštA.
The group is arriving here.

áxkUx wiítA taáʾ.
"One man he comes.
nooteeríhIt.
He is alone.
kooxeewísaʾ.
He will come here.
kooxuhnuníkUx.
You will wait for him.
hawá pítkUx šinaawáʾ.
Also two they (du) come.
táWIt nuhnaanúʾ wenaraána haáwaʾ.
Three there are their coming also.
áxkUx neehiRAxá.
One he comes in the lead.
naaWIsá šuuNUxuníkUx.
When he comes here wait for him!
kooxeewísaʾ.
He will arrive here."

nikunoowituúta tinaákUx wiiteešútš NAhkureewaawatí- RA niiwekohniihawé.
Then he did that this young man when he looked all around however many nights it was.
noowituuteéRIt wiítA.
Then he saw him a man.
nuukuwiteenáʾ wiítA.
Over there he came at a distance a man.
taRAhtšíniʾ witaáʾ.
Barely he came.
wituhnuníkUx wiítA Ahnoóxa anináʾU wiiteešútš.
He awaited him the man the one coming this young man.

Ahnoóxa hee či NAxwanúʾ
(To) the one coming: "Hey, here you are going around,"
weWIšitohnarikawaátš weWIšitooNAhunuuwaá- NAx.
as they (du) were happy to see each other when they (du) now found each other.
nawáh nuuháʾ šitátkUx.
"Now over there we (du) live."

haa wetatinaakIhtakuuwáʾ.
"Hey, our group is coming now.
wetikuraahniWAhteekawoo- tíhuʾ.
We are all starving to death.
na niinaataraʾóʾ taanikuʾaataraa- kítAt niinatuxtaakítAt.
And they are discussing it this is where we should camp where we had camped.
hee wenehnapískaʾ paatúh wešitehnaakoótIt.
Hey, we thought: 'The enemy now they must have killed you (du).'
